High breaking capacity fuses are used with MCBs because MCBs have limited rupturing capacity and may not safely interrupt very high short-circuit currents. An MCB can trip for overloads and moderate faults, but if a severe fault pushes current beyond what the MCB can safely interrupt, arcing or damage to the MCB and wiring can occur. A high breaking capacity fuse has a higher interrupting rating and a fast-acting element that will open the circuit quickly when extreme fault currents occur, protecting both the MCB and the downstream equipment. In protection schemes, the fuse acts as a backup to handle those very high faults, while the MCB handles normal overloads and smaller faults. This arrangement isn’t primarily about cost, DC isolation, or energy efficiency.
